INTRODUCTION
Present-day downtown Rutland City has several buildings and sites with direct ties to the Civil War and its participants. Some of these sites are pre-Civil War, and reflect ways in which Rutland contributed to the war effort: e.g. media (Rutland Herald), travel (Rutland Railroad), hospitality (Bardwell House), organization and training (Rutland Fairgrounds). Others are directly tied to prominent Rutlanders who made significant contributions to the war effort, and returned to Rutland to build the city, and lead successful and productive lives.
Rutland is just one stop on the Vermont in the Civil War Heritage Trail. Read more about it here.
