Finley Jay Shepard (1911-1970) was a notable figure in Vermont. He was the first of three children legally adopted by Finley Johnson Shepard and Helen Miller Gould Shepard.  Finley was found on the steps of Saint Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City in 1914 and adopted about a year later.  He lived in Wallingford, Vermont, where he worked as a landscape gardener and later became the president of The Hardware Center. Finley was also active in civic and service organizations, founded Alcoholics Anonymous in Vermont, and served on the Wallingford School Board. He made unsuccessful runs for Congress in 1948 and the Senate in 1950
