The Bardwell House
The Bardwell House opened in 1852. Though fires have taken a toll over the years, the Bardwell remains a fixture in the downtown area. Today, the Bardwell House retains its name, and provides special needs housing.
In 1858, the body of John Brown passed through Rutland en route to burial in North Elba, NY. The body remained overnight at the rail depot. The party accompanying the body, which included John Brown’s wife, spent the night at the Bardwell.
Financier (and future “robber baron”) Jay Gould was more than an overnight guest. During the war years, he was president of the Rutland and Washington Railroad, and resided at the Bardwell.
