Patrick Kelly

Hurled To His Death

Fearful Fall of Patrick Kelly 60 feet in the Esperanza Quarry

Patrick Kelly, an unmarried man, 30 years of age, employed as a derrick man at the Esperanza Quarry in West Rutland, was killed instantly yesterday afternoon by falling a distance of 60 feet into the Quarry.

At the time of the accident Kelly was holding the tail rope of the derrick which he had wound around a stub on the bank for the purpose of steadying the boom.  He stood on the verge of the quarry when the taut rope between his outstretched hands broke and he was hurled to his death.

When found life was extinct.  Kelly had worked for the Experanza for a year or more , was an honest, trustworthy man and a general favorite with all of his fellow workers.  He has a brother living in the vicinity and friends at Center Rutland, where he worked for some time.  The remains were taken to the house of Patrick Dempsey, his boarding place near the quarry.
